BLUE JAY.

Outside my window. Since my last posting I've been on one heck of a trip: Up to death'

door,literally, but clawed back from the brink by the miracle of modern medical tecnology. I have also changed my address. I am presently living in a Personal Home Care facility: Meadow Creek Retirement Centre, Paradise, NL, and contrary to everything I imagined, I love it here,and am feeling better and happier than I have been in a long time. My children placed a bird feeder near my window and it soon attracted those beautiful birds,. The only problem is that the crows get there first and clean up most of the food, I'd like to wring their necks, they are such an awful pest . In this case I'm not sure that intelligence is such a virtue. They are very greedy.

. These little daisies look like the common Ox-eye Daisy, except they are much smaller and the leaves of the plant are very different.

THE ONE THAT NEVER GOT AWAY.

Flies may be amongst the lowest forms of life, but ,as humans, we may have already exceeded that distinction by our greed, our selfishness, and our lust to use to extintion all the finite resources of the planet. Man may have a brain, but he sure as hell , unlike the fly, does not have a lot of common sense. We appear to be blind to what is happening all around us. The flies may survive, (at this point, we don't harvest them) where we, most likely, will all perish

This is a delicious drink, easy to prepare, abundant and free because it grows in the wild. I wonder why no one has hit upon the idea of marketing it.

AFRICAN VIOLET.

Mostly setimental reasons. This little plant is coming into its first bloom. It is a clipping from from my mom's African Violet that has been well cared for in her memory. My mom has been deceased for 38 years, so the mother plant has got to be at least 40 years old. She was a great lover of plants and would be glad to know that her Violet is still thriving and sharing its beauty.

SHEPHERD'S PURSE.

. Those little flowers are so tiny, that one would need to get down on one's hands and knees and crawl through the grass and rubble in order to find them, and they are not all that plentiful. I have found only one plant so far in my "spot". The blossoms are only c. 1/16 " in diameter.

. The name is derived from the shape of the seed capusles that look like ancient shepherd's purses.

LABRADOR TEA.

.This plant grows abundantly in the cool bogs of Newfoundland and Labrador. The leaves were steeped and used by the older folk as a delicious and refreshing substitute for tea. The leaves are easily recognized because of the fuffy brown colour of the back of the leaves. Next time you are hiking. and come across this plant, pick some leaves and carry them home to try.

A MUN student called me a few mornings to tell me he was doning a researsh paper on Sop's island and wondered if I could help. I was not awake and unfortunately sounded not too hospitable. This I regret. I know Sop's Island in the 1945-60's period Like I know the palm of my hand. I remember the adults, and the children, even many of them by name. One of the shuttle boats on anchorage in the tickle while waiting her turn to load at one of the oil wells, and shuttle her load to land at one of the storeage facilities in Placentia Bay. Newfoundland riches claimed by Canada and distributed accordingly. We sure "got the shaft"!

By the way, for the uniniated . this vast reserve l of oil is located on Nerwfoundland's Grand Banks.

TULIPS.

School's out, the tulips are up and the capelin are in: the sure signs that summer had arrived. Nothing has remained unchanged except the "capelin scull" weather .
Great monsters of the deep have vacuumed up the capelin for the purpose of extracting the spawn from the females., while the remainder , including the males, are dumped back, dead, into the ocean. Capelin being the lynchpin of the ocean's food-chain, nothing illustrates better the insufferable greed of humankind nor the oft times barbaric abuse of the ecosystem.

and the solar system, which is but an infinitely small speck in the cosmos, His handiwork.

There is nothing more awesome than watching a bud unfold into leaf, for there is revealed the majesty of life: something shared by every living thing , and where the guiding principle is love for all creation: This was understood much better by the Native peoples than those who tried to convert them into our more "civilized" way of life.

To imagine that we could ever create life is as foolish as imagining that a river could ever rise above its source. The cosmetic use of herbicides and its total disregard of the consequences is but one illustration of our human folly. Cat piss precludes the cultivation of cottage gardens in the urban setting, but there they have nice green lawns. Sadly, some of the outports, are trying to mimic this stupidity. Where are the sheep and goats that used to mow the "lawns:" !! Don't go there looking for flowers unless they are the product of the local super-market , where all seeds are strictly under the control of the mercenaries. such as Monsanto.

I have no religious agenda, but I would have to be a fool not to acknowledge the power that is transcendent in the universe: call it God or whatever you wish. I watch it every time I see a bee oblige the erotic passion between a male and female flower.

BUDS BURSTING INTO LEAF.

Not ever having observed it closely in the wild , I was quite amazed to see how quickly this happened yesteday.

Abour a week ago I picked a small branch of what I believed to be maple tree buds, and placed them in fertilized water on my window sill. I figured it would be a slow process that would give me plenty of time to record the unfolding. At mid-day they looked the same but by late afternoon they had all burst into leaf as if on cue.

This is the first wild plant I've found in bloom this Spring in my neck of the woods. Actually, I found it in a gravel bank not too far from my back door. The blossoms are so tiny that one would not likely see them unless looking for them.

MAX CLARK'S NEW MOTOR-BOAT.

This is the real McCoy, an authentic Newfoundland "motorboat" , powered by a 6 1/2 hp Acadia make an'break engine, and built by an elder craftsman in Trinity. This is a unique Newfoundland design, developed and honed by many generations of Newfoundland fisherman This is a skill that will be lost to the new Newfoundland generations who must comply with the utterly stupid DFO regulations which result in fishermen having to go to sea in ugly ducklings and floating coffins. Perhaps there is nothing that can better illustrate the absurdity of Newfoundland being governed by Ottawa.

A couple of summers ago I had occasion to visit the boat museum in Winterton. I couldn't believe what they have on display there as a Newfoundland motor-boat. This is a band-saw job, and no more like a real Nfld. boat than Buggs Bunny is like a rabbit. Perhaps they intended this only as a mock-up to con the tourists. However, It is an embarrassment to have this in a museum. Surely the genuine article would be more apropos. Thanks to people like Max Clark who provide a market and encouragement, there will be reason to keep the old traditional craft alive and boat builders occupied until they too pass away.

THE EVE OF ALL FOOLS DAY.

.Confederation might have been a good thing, perhaps inevitable, had the union been conducted in an honourable manner. Instead we were conned into signing away our independence and our land subsequently gang raped: an obscenity still continuing. Forget it ,some tell me ,and get on with my life, but history does not work that way. What goes around, comes around. There is no fairness or equality in this equation, nor has there ever been. Imagine a bunch of ding-bat blue-collared bureaucrats on the RIideau telling our fishermen what they can catch and when and where they can catch it. It must be infuriating! Fishing is not a job, it is a way of life, it is who we are. Some who forget Bell Island, Buchans and St. Lawrence foolishly believe that the oil will run on forever and ever. Even that, except for some scraps ,was taken away from us.

In Lamaline, I had my own boys' group. CBL.(Church Boys League) We met every week for various activities and camped every summer on Percy Brook. However, there were many lads who had no such activity. I believed a branch of the Sea Cadets would be a good idea since it would be all inclusive. I discussed the matter with Fr,. Hogan, RC priest in the parish. He was enthusiastic and offered to help in every way possible. Our cooperation in those bad old days was a rare occasion. Like me, he is in his 80s now. but I hope he is still going strong. A finer gentleman, I have never met. It was left to me to meet the top brass in St, John's to seek permission. Not only was I given permission, but I was given far more help than ever I expected. They even provided funds so that we could bus in the lads from the nearby communities. Our area extended from Lord"Cove to Point May. Many of those lads got to see the big world on the outside for the first time., and some found their vocation in the scrummage of so many activities and opportunities . After Fr. Hogan and I left, the group fell apart.

I understand that a new branch of the Sea Cadets had been formed in Lamaline , but under different auspices, different location and different name. RCSC Caslypso seems to be completely forgotten.

What a shame and why??? Many of the dads and grand-dads of the present troop were members of the old Calypso corps. A plaque or banner placed in the new drill hall in memory of that old episode would be most appropriate; not to mention the associated fascinating chapter of our history.

THE HMS CALYPSO.

Built in 1881-84, she must have been an awesome sight! Besides sails , she had a powerful engine with two propellers. After service in the British navy, she was given to the Newfoundland Government in 1902 for coastal patrol. Later she became a training ship for the Newfoundland Naval Reserve , many members of which served in the First World War. The wreckage on the shore in Embree attracts many visitors. CALYPSO LAMP.

The Calypso was towed to Embree, 1952, where she was subsequently dismantled and burned, except for the hull which was steel, covered over with planks. I turned this lamp from a small piece of her mahogany deck. Little was salvageable except the copper that encased her lower hull. All superstructure had been removed sometime after 1902 and replaced by a drill hall for the training of Nfld volunteers for the Naval Reserve, and in 1916 her name was changed to HMS Briton. She remained in this service until 1922 when she was sold to A.H. Murray as a salt storage shed in St. John's harbour: a landmark for many years.

ACROSS CHAMBERLAIN'S POND.

I got out today for the first time since last fall to visit some of my local haunts. Actually I was looking for a blooming crocus or some other sign of the re-birth of Spring. I know there are some in bloom; so maybe I'll find one another day. This photo was taken acoss Chamberlain's Pond, looking towards Bell Island. It never froze at all this winter, but there is some ice clinging to the shoreline, like it used to be on the 24th of May when it was hard to get a line out fishing from the shore. We may rejoice in our warmer winters, but the price we are about to pay is, for most, incomprhensible. Warming climate and an impending premature ice-age seem to most an oxymoron. Where ignorance and greed is bliss............. God .(or, the planet if you prefer) , has zero tolerance for fools. We have made one hell of a mess of it all.

THE NEW AGE PLASTIC WORLD.

Plastic, plastic everywhere, but dead life's rhapsody.

When we were children, one of the great joys of winter was building and competing with our own slides (sleds). Small ones were called "belly-busters" and used mostly by dare-devils. You lay down rather than sit on these. The larger size could carry two, usually a lad and one of the girls.. The largest size were the bob-sleds. These could carry four or more.. Some slides, especially the bob-sleds had an extra runner, or runners, used for steering. A rod on which the feet , or hands were placed extended either side of the steering runner. On moonlight nights, young adults - the courting crowd - joined the youngsters, and Pitts Hill was a cacophony of screaming delight. Later came the factory built type for those who could afford them. These were called "coasters" but were no match for the home-made ones either in speed or in durability. My dad, being a blacksmith, I had the advantage of custom-built shoes. Round ones were the best.

HAPPY HOLIDAY.

.Just as Canada usurped our National Day of Memorial and turned it into Canada Day, so the pagan rituals of the Solstice - an orgy of spending , drinking and gluttony - are usurping the Christmas festival. There are those immigrants amongst us; particularly Jews and Muslims who would like to see the Observance completely abolished, and any reference to Christ removed from all public institutions, including schools. Rrudolph and Frosty are much more benign icons. Ironically, merchants who make their greatest profits by shamelessly exploiting the Birth of Christ, dare not mention this event for fear of offending. NO wonder Canada is known as a great place to which to migrate. Bring your Talmud, your Koran, your turbans and your Hijab. We don't mind. We are a tolerant people without a culture of our own. I am by no means a religious bigot, but I am ashamed to have been absorbed into a country without an identity, or without the guts to stand up for what we do believe - if anything!
